SOUTH AFRICAN RED WINES

Between two oceans: the wine-producing soul of Africa

South Africa is one of the most fascinating wine-producing regions in the southern hemisphere, a country where tradition and innovation come together in an extraordinarily rich and diverse wine landscape. With a wine-growing history dating back to 1655, it is one of the New World regions with the longest tradition, but it was only after the end of apartheid that it was able to fully express its quality potential on the international scene. Its unique geographical location, with the Atlantic and Indian oceans mitigating temperatures, and the extraordinary variety of soils and microclimates create ideal conditions for the production of red wines of great character and recognisability. Our selection explores the different wine-growing regions, from the cool hills of Stellenbosch and Constantia to the warmer areas of Paarl and Swartland, favouring producers who authentically interpret the different terroirs and who are contributing to the qualitative growth that has transformed South Africa into one of the most dynamic and interesting wine destinations in the world. Particular focus is given to companies committed to sustainable practices and Fair Trade certification programmes, which guarantee fair working conditions in a country still marked by profound social inequalities.

Pinotage: South African pride between tradition and renewal

The beating heart of our collection is Pinotage, an emblematic grape variety created in 1925 by Professor Abraham Perold by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault (locally called Hermitage). After years of controversial reputation, this grape variety is experiencing a real renaissance thanks to passionate producers who have revolutionised the approach in the vineyard and winery, transforming it from a rustic variety to the protagonist of wines of great character and finesse. The best examples reveal a unique aromatic profile combining red and black fruits (cherry, blackberry), notes of coffee and chocolate, and a characteristic earthy and smoky touch, supported by a well-defined tannic structure and good freshness that balances its natural richness. Our selection ranges from the most traditional and powerful interpretations to the most modern and elegant versions, including some surprising examples vinified in the Beaujolais style that enhance the more fruity and immediate side of the grape variety. Particularly interesting are the Pinotages from old, unirrigated bush vines, which in cooler coastal areas such as Walker Bay produce wines of extraordinary complexity and ageing potential.

From Stellenbosch to Swartland: terroirs of excellence and other varieties

In addition to Pinotage, our selection showcases South African excellence with other varieties that have found distinctive expressions in this territory. Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon is a benchmark for quality, with structured yet elegant wines that combine the typical power of the variety with a distinctive mentholated note and a freshness that reflects the influence of the ocean. Syrah/Shiraz has found a unique interpretation in South Africa, stylistically positioned between the spiciness and elegance of the Rhône and the fruity power of Australia, with particularly interesting examples from the Swartland region, where old vines on granite and schist soils produce wines of extraordinary complexity and territorial character. Our collection also includes excellent Bordeaux blends, a well-established tradition in the Stellenbosch region, as well as innovative blends based on Mediterranean varieties such as Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, which are producing exciting results in the warmer areas. Particular attention is paid to emerging producers in Swartland, the epicentre of South Africa's quality revolution, who are redefining the identity of South African red wines with minimalist approaches in the cellar and the restoration of old vineyards, favouring freshness, balance and territorial expression over the power and concentration that characterised the style of the past.
