PIEDMONT

Nobility in a bottle: an unrivalled wine heritage

Our selection of Piedmontese red wines represents the most fascinating journey into the heart of Italian wine excellence. Piedmont, with its extraordinary mosaic of terroirs and wealth of native grape varieties, has created an unmistakable style, where rigour, elegance and longevity come together in wines of incomparable personality. The hills of Langa and Monferrato, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with their complex soils of calcareous marl, clay and sand, combined with a continental climate with marked temperature variations, create the ideal conditions for demanding grape varieties such as Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Our collection celebrates both the big names that have made Italian wine history and the small artisan producers who keep centuries-old traditions alive, offering a complete overview of the different souls of Piedmontese wine: from the regal austerity of the great Nebbiolos to the versatile freshness of the Barberas and the immediate drinkability of the Dolcettos. Each bottle tells the story not only of a grape variety or a territory, but also of a wine culture that has evolved while respecting its own identity, combining traditional methods and technical innovations with a single goal: to best express the essence of its terroir.

The great Nebbiolos: from Barolo to Barbaresco, the aristocracy of Italian wine

The beating heart of our selection is represented by the different expressions of Nebbiolo, the prince of Langhe grape varieties, which finds its maximum expression in the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Barolo, with its imposing structure, noble tannins and a bouquet of extraordinary complexity ranging from floral notes of rose and violet to red fruits, spices, tobacco, liquorice and truffle, represents the pinnacle of Italian wine production. Our collection explores the diversity of historic crus – from Cannubi to Brunate, from Monfortino to Vigna Rionda – each with distinctive characteristics due to exposure, altitude and soil composition. Barbaresco, more accessible in its youth but no less complex and long-lived, offers more elegant and subtle versions of the same grape variety, with silkier tannins and an aromatic profile that leans towards more fruity and spicy notes. There is no shortage of extraordinary interpretations of Nebbiolo from other appellations, such as Roero, where sandier soils lend greater immediacy and finesse, or the rare expressions of Alto Piemonte – Gattinara, Ghemme, Lessona, Boca – where the grape variety, influenced by partially volcanic soils and a cooler climate, develops a more vertical profile and more pronounced minerality. Our selection encompasses both the more traditional interpretations, with long macerations and ageing in large oak barrels, and the more modern versions that focus on more delicate extractions and calibrated ageing in smaller woods, thus offering a complete overview of the stylistic evolution of these great wines.

The versatility of Barbera: from Monferrato to Asti

Alongside the noble Nebbiolo, our collection celebrates the other great protagonist of Piedmontese oenology: Barbera. This versatile grape variety, characterised by its intense colour, vibrant acidity and moderate tannin content, finds its most representative expressions in Monferrato, the hills of Asti and the Alba area. Barbera d'Asti, in its Superiore and non-Superiore versions, offers wines of extraordinary drinkability but also remarkable complexity, with notes of ripe cherries, plums, spices and a characteristic acidity that makes them ideal companions at the table. Barbera d'Alba, grown on the same land as Barolo and Barbaresco, tends to be more structured and concentrated, often aged in wood to tame its natural acidity. Our selection highlights both the more traditional and immediate versions, which enhance the freshness and fragrance of the fruit, and the more ambitious interpretations, such as the Reserves and single vineyard selections, which demonstrate the extraordinary potential for evolution of this often underrated grape variety. Particular attention is also paid to Barbera del Monferrato, where the grape variety finds some of its most authentic and territorial expressions, and to the rare sparkling or lively versions that represent a historical tradition of the region.

Hidden treasures: Dolcetto, Freisa, Grignolino and indigenous rarities

Piedmont's oenological wealth goes far beyond the celebrated Nebbiolo and Barbera, and our collection passionately explores the varied world of other indigenous grape varieties that represent a unique heritage of biodiversity. Dolcetto, with its various appellations (d'Alba, d'Asti, di Dogliani, di Ovada), offers immediately enjoyable wines, characterised by notes of crisp red fruits, almonds and a fine but present tannicity, ideal for everyday consumption. Freisa, an ancient grape variety related to Nebbiolo, produces wines of character with an unmistakable aromatic profile of raspberry, rosehip and spices, available in both still and sparkling versions according to tradition. Grignolino, with its light colour that belies its significant tannic structure, offers wines of extraordinary aromatic finesse with floral and spicy notes. Our selection also highlights lesser-known but highly interesting varieties such as Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato, with its unmistakable aromatic profile of rose petals and exotic spices; Malvasia di Casorzo, which produces aromatic red wines, often in a sweet version; Pelaverga di Verduno, with its characteristic notes of white pepper; and rarities such as Baratuciat, Uva Rara, Bian Ver and Gamba di Pernice, grape varieties rediscovered and promoted by passionate producers who keep Piedmont's extraordinary viticultural biodiversity alive.

Today, Piedmont's red wines represent a cultural as well as an oenological heritage, capable of recounting the history and identity of a territory where viticulture has been an integral part of the landscape and economy for centuries. From the regal complexity of the great Barolo and Barbaresco wines, capable of evolving over twenty years, to the everyday pleasure of Dolcetto, through the versatility of Barbera and the refined originality of Freisa, Grignolino and Ruchè, our selection offers a complete and comprehensive overview of the different souls of Piedmontese winemaking. Each bottle tells the story not only of a grape variety or a territory, but also of the passion and dedication of generations of winemakers who have kept alive a winemaking tradition that represents Italian excellence in the world.
