PRIMITIVO

Primitivo is a red wine typical of southern Italy, Apulia in particular, where it is famous in the two appellations Primitivo di Manduria, in Salento, and Gioia del Colle Primitivo.

In this section, you will find the best Primitivo wines to enjoy with friends over dinner.

Why is it called Primitivo?

This wine owes its name to the red grape variety from which it originates, Primitivo, so called because of its early ripening, which means it is harvested between the end of August and the beginning of September.

What kind of wine is Primitivo di Manduria?

The wines derived from it are characterized by a high alcohol content, which allows for long aging, a ruby red color with violet reflections, and a high sugar content.

The organoleptic characteristics of this wine are well defined: red fruits and spiciness, more or less pronounced depending on the type of aging. On the palate, it is warm and round, smooth and often almost sweet: characteristics that make it recognizable among many red wines.

The different types of Primitivo

Its origin seems to be Croatian, but it is in Puglia that Primitivo has found its ideal habitat: here, the vines are grown as saplings and produce wines with great body and structure.

There are two appellations with subtle differences:

- Gioia del Colle Primitivo has mineral notes and a more pronounced elegance;

- Primitivo di Manduria is usually more intense and full-bodied. There is also a Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale version, which involves drying the grapes to produce a sweet red wine, perfect as a meditation wine.

What to pair it with?

Due to its characteristics, Primitivo pairs well with rich, flavorful dishes, particularly grilled or stewed red meat. Find your favorite Primitivo in this selection and discover one of the most important red wines of Puglia and Southern Italy.

How much does a good Primitivo wine cost?

The price of a good Primitivo varies greatly depending on the vintage, aging, appellation, and style of the producer.

Puglia and Salento Primitivo IGT entry level: €8-10. Excellent value for money, also suitable as an aperitif.

Primitivo di Manduria DOC: €12-18. A more important red, excellent with main courses.
