Brand
The origins of a legendary maison
At the origin of it all is the name of the Benedictine monk Dom Thierry Ruinart, who lived between the 17th and 18th centuries. He was a theologian and historian, but above all a brilliant, intuitive and visionary person who, at only 23 years of age, upon hearing about a new wine not yet called “Champagne” but particularly popular among Parisian aristocrats, he understood that what was then known as “vin de bulles”, or sparkling wine, would have a great future.
This was the beginning of the history of what is now the oldest Maison in the entire Champagne region.
A story that officially began on 1 September 1729, when Nicolas Ruinart, 33, a draper in Reims like his father and nephew Dom Thierry Ruinart, opened his first account book dedicated to “vin de bulles”.
A pioneering vision
The first bottles were intended as gifts for his traditional customers after they had purchased drapery and fabrics. But Nicolas was a shrewd and refined businessman, gifted with the same pioneering vision as his uncle Thierry Ruinart. History proved him right: just six years later, the family abandoned the fabric trade to devote themselves to the Champagne trade.
Success
The Maison grew rapidly: from 170 bottles sold in 1730 to over 36,000 in 1761, until its definitive success in the 19th century. A style based on Chardonnay and its elegance, without ever losing sight of density and volume.
Whether Champagne Brut, Champagne Blanc de Blancs or Champagne Rosé, all Ruinart Champagnes are unique and instantly recognisable, distinguished by their unparalleled purity, paired with the finest ingredients and absolutely worth every penny.
The present: joining the LVMH group
Acquired in 1963 by Moët et Chandon, now part of the larger LVMH group, the Ruinart brand continues to be unquestionably synonymous with the best and most excellent Champagnes available online at Tannico's online wine shop.
